We Must Be Wise

I want to revisit the abortion debate that is causing so much controversy right now. And I want to be absolutely clear at the very beginning: I would like to see the Supreme Court rule that there is a presumption in our Constitution that all life is protected and you can’t take a life without due process of law.

But even with the majority we have today, it’s not clear to me that there are five votes for that position. What is clear is that most Americans are deeply conflicted and divided over the issue.

According to Gallup’s polling, only 13% of Americans favor banning all abortions. In contrast, 34% believe abortion should be legal in any circumstance, while 51% are somewhere in between.

The Knights of Columbus poll found similar results: 9% favor banning all abortions, 29% believe abortion should be available during the entire pregnancy, and 62% would still allow it in certain circumstances.

The Pew Research Center finds that 35% of Americans believe some states are making it too easy to get abortions, while 62% believe some states are going too far in restricting abortion.

The left is doing everything it can to convince the American people that pro-life conservatives are extremists who want to ban all abortions. If they succeed, the pro-life movement loses. The left has already been successful even in conservative states like Kentucky and Ohio in the last year.

If pro-life conservatives can convince the American people that the real extremists are, in fact, the abortion on demand leftists, we have a chance to win that battle.

Donald Trump has made that case. He has gone after the left’s pro-abortion extremism, and he did it again when he made a statement this week that some of us didn’t completely embrace.

From 1973 to 2022, the position of the pro-life movement has been to overturn Roe v. Wade and return the issue back to the states. The conservative majority on the Supreme Court did that.

Here’s the irony: If the left succeeds in convincing the public that if pro-life conservatives get power in Washington, D.C., and in many states, we will ban all abortions, we will likely go deeper in the hole in Congress, lose control in many states, and the left will impose their extremist position of abortion on demand nationwide.

This is the time to follow the biblical injunction to be as wise as serpents.

The one thing we must not do is risk the left continuing to control Washington, maybe even with bigger margins than it has now. If that happens, we will not only get Roe v. Wade passed into law by Congress, but we will lose everything else. They will eliminate the filibuster, pack the Supreme Court, and end religious liberty.
